Why defamation suits in Australia are so ubiquitous, and difficult to defend for media organisations – Brendan Clift

Attorney-General Christian Porter is suing the ABC for defamation and claiming aggravated damages. Porter is claiming that an article published last month included false allegations against him in relation to a historical rape. A statement from his lawyer says although Porter was not named, the article made allegations against a senior cabinet minister “and the attorney-general was easily identifiable to many Australians”. Law and Media Round Up – 15 March 2021

On 10 March, ITV released a statement: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.” The announcement came after broadcast regulator Ofcom launched an investigation into comments made by Morgan about the Duchess of Sussex discussing her mental health and suicidal thoughts in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
