The reserved judgment in the case of Johnny Depp v News Group Newspapers will be handed down by Mr Justice Nicol on 2 November 2020.  The trial took place over 16 days between 7 and 28 July 2020.

Mr Depp  sued News Group Newspapers, publishers of the Sun, and one of its journalists, Dan Wootton, over a 2018 article which it was stated that he had been violent towards his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, 34, and which questioned his casting in the “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” movie franchise.  The Court heard evidence from Mr Depp, Ms Heard and a number of other witnesses.

The central issue in the case was whether Ms Heard’s allegations about Mr Depp’s violent conduct were “substantially true”.  If the Judge finds that the Sun has failed to prove substantial truth then Mr Depp will be awarded damages.  Bearing in mind the seriousness of the allegations it is likely that a large award will be made.
