The Michaelmas Legal Term began on Monday 1 October and ends on Friday, 21 December 2018. This post deals with media law cases listed for this term and cases in which decisions are awaited. Please let us know if there are any other media law cases which should be added to this post.

We are aware of  cases listed for trial this term.  Only two are against UK media defendants:

8 October 2018, Ashraf v Dunya News Ltdhalf a day. A trial of a preliminary issue on meaning in a defamation claim.  Jay J found that the broadcast complained of bore a Chase Level 3 meaning.

15 October 2018, Various Claimants v News Group Newspapers, 6 weeks, Mann J, Trial of the lastest tranche of the News Group Newspapers phone hacking claim [Update]

15 October 2018, Doyle v Smith, listed for 5 days. A defamation claim issued on 7 February 2017 arising out of website articles.  The Claim Form and Particulars of Claim are available on Lawtel [£].

29 October 2018, Computer Science v Price, listed for half a day.

5 November 2018. PTW v WTP, listed for 4 days. A privacy and harassment claim.

26 November 2018 LB of Croydon v Dodsworth & ors listed for 1.5 days. A breach of confidence claim. An interim injunction was granted in September 2017 ([2017] EWHC 2257 (QB))

26 November 2018, Demouh v Hellen & Sunday Times,  listed for 34 days.  A privacy claim.

26 November 2018, ZXC v Bloomberg LP  listed for 4 days.  A privacy and breach of confidence claim. An injunction was refused in February 2017 ([2017] EWHC 328 (QB)).

There is one media and information case listed before the Supreme Court this term

13 and 14 November 2018, Lachaux v Independent Print (Lords Kerr, Wilson, Sumption, Hodge and Briggs).  The appeal is against the decision ([2017] EWCA Civ 1334) of the Court of Appeal (MacFarlane, Davis and Sharp LJJ)  against the decision of  Warby J on preliminary issues ([2015] EWHC 2242 (QB)). The Grounds of Appeal can be found here [pdf].  We had a post on the Court of Appeal decision here.

We know of four media and information law appeals listed in the Court of Appeal this term:

9 to 10 October 2018, Various Claimants v W M Morrisons Supermarkets plcMaster of the Rolls, Bean and Flaux LJJ.  An appeal against a decision of Langstaff J  [2018] 3 WLR 691

17 or 18 October 2018, Butt v The Secretary of State for the Home Department.  An appeal from Nicol J [2017] EWHC 2619 (QB).

4 December 2018, Ali & Anr v Channel 5 Broadcast Limited.  An appeal against a decision of Arnold J on quantum and a cross appeal on liablity ([2018] EWHC 298 (Ch)).  We had a post on the first instance decision.

20 December 2018, NT1 v Google LLC (A company incorporated in Delaware USA)  An appeal against a decision of Warby J [2018] EWHC 799 (QB).  We had a post on the first instance decision.
