The subject under discussion was ‘Confidentiality Clauses and Special Severance Payments’ – primarily NHS executives’ compromise agreements – a.k.a. unpopular large payoffs at public expense. It is an ugly spectacle: a Cabinet minister being pushed around in public by a powerful and unscrupulous vested interest. But that seems to be what is happening to Maria Miller, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport – and she is not putting up much of a fight.

Last month, Private Eye reported that Sun journalists had taped a meeting with Rupert Murdoch in March 2013. The Executive Chairman of News Corporation was quoted as taking a supportive view of the position of arrested journalists. This story was not followed up at the time. It broke again this week when the investigative journalism website, Exaro and Channel 4 News claimed an exclusive on the story and released a transcript of the recording. Continue reading

It is claimed that the Government has decided to delay pressing ahead with the Royal Charter for press regulation – the one that enjoys all-party support – and instead, the Privy Council will next week consider the Charter submitted by the press as an alternative, which, as any fule kno, is merely a re-heating of the discredited Press Complaints Commission (PCC), supposedly to head off further legal action.
