News: Daily Mail agrees to pay £110,000 damages to risk management consultancy

daily_news_logoOn 26 June 2013 a Statement in Open Court [pdf] was made in another action against the Daily Mail.  Following last week’s Sally Morgan apology, the paper has apologised for an article on its website which falsely linked Britam Defence a risk management and training consultancy, and two of its senior Directors (David Goulding and Philip Doughty) with an alleged plot to carry out a chemical weapons atrocity in Syria. The Daily Mail agreed to pay £110,000 damages, plus legal costs. Continue reading

News: Daily Mail agrees to pay £125,000 libel damages to Sally Morgan

sally morganThe publishers of the Daily Mail have agreed to pay damages of £125,000 to the “psychic to the stars”, Sally Morgan, in respect of an article which alleged that she had cheated an audience in Dublin by using an earpiece.  The trial of the action had been due to commence on 10 June 2013 but a settlement was announced in a Statement in Open Court [pdf] read to Mr Justice Tugendhat on 20 June 2013. News: London Riots “Good Samaritan” receives damages and apology from the police – Tamsin Allen and Samantha Broadley

Leslie-AustinIn a Statement in Open Court [pdf] read out on Friday 3 May 2013, the Metropolitan Police admitted they had failed to take adequate steps to remove posters suggesting that Leslie Austin, a Hackney resident, was involved in the Hackney riots. The posters continued to be published for some months after officers accepted his role during the riots was as a “Good Samaritan” and “a model citizen”.  The police agreed to pay substantial damages and his legal costs and undertook not to repeat the allegations.
