On 11 March 2026 judgment was handed down by Collins Rice J in Kamal v Tax Policy Associates Ltd & Anor [2026] EWHC 551 (KB), the first case considering the anti-SLAPP rules in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. The final hearing before the Investigatory Powers Tribunal in the claim brought by Vincent Kearney and the BBC against MI5, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Metropolitan Police Service, Durham Constabulary and others concluded on 3 March 2926. The open hearing focused on Mr Kearney’s claim for damages after MI5, the PSNI and the Metropolitan Police had admitted unlawfully acquiring Mr Kearney’s communication data between 2006 and 2013. Ofcom has issued its first major fine under the Online Safety Act 2023. The AVS Group Ltd – which runs 18 adult websites – has been fined £1 million for not having robust age checks in place, plus £50,000 for failing to respond to information requests. The regulator has also reported on how the online safety landscape is changing, following new UK laws coming into effect this year. Continue reading
