On 30 October 2026, the Divisional Court (Singh LJ and Collins Rice J) handed down judgment dismissing challenges brought by Meta, X and TikTok to information requests issued by Ofcom pursuant to its powers under the Online Safety Act 2023, R (Meta, X and TikTok) v Ofcom [2026] EWHC 2779 (Admin). On 13 October 2026, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) handed down judgment in Duff and BBC Scotland v the United Kingdom 8562/19. The ECtHR found that the exclusion of BBC Scotland journalist Steven Duff from a closed hearing at Aberdeen Sheriff Court violated Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The Court also found a violation of Article 13, the right to an effective remedy. Continue reading

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has today announced a Australian-style ban for Teenagers under the age of 16 from accessing “high-risk” social media apps while safer platforms will be subjected to restrictions. There will blocks on harmful functions such as livestreaming and stranger communication with children for under-16s. These proposals were made after a consultation on keeping children safe online. On 11 March 2026 judgment was handed down by Collins Rice J in Kamal v Tax Policy Associates Ltd & Anor [2026] EWHC 551 (KB), the first case considering the anti-SLAPP rules in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. The final hearing before the Investigatory Powers Tribunal in the claim brought by Vincent Kearney and the BBC against MI5, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Metropolitan Police Service, Durham Constabulary and others concluded on 3 March 2926. The open hearing focused on Mr Kearney’s claim for damages after MI5, the PSNI and the Metropolitan Police had admitted unlawfully acquiring Mr Kearney’s communication data between 2006 and 2013.
