The Central London County Court has awarded data protection and misuse of private information damages totalling £9,000 to former police officer Andrea Brown. In a judgment [pdf] handed down on 7 October 2016, HHJ Luba QC order the Metropolitan Police to pay £6,000 and the Greater Manchester Police to pay £3,000. Continue reading
An Italian investigative journalist has recently claimed to have ‘unmasked’ the pseudonymous Elena Ferrante, the bestselling Italian author of the ‘Neapolitan quartet’ of novels. Ferrante has consistently guarded her real identity and has been writing under the pseudonym since 1992. This raises interesting questions in connection with privacy rights and whether it could be considered a breach of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights to reveal the name of an individual who otherwise wished to be anonymous. Yet On Wednesday , October 5, after two and a bit days of deliberation, a jury at London’s Old Bailey unanimously found Sun journalist Mazher Mahmood guilty of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
