The Media Bill has been passed by the House of Lords as one of the outstanding pieces of legislation rushed through Parliament following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to call a general election on 4 July 2024. On 25 April 2024, Collins Rice J delivered a decision on damages for the successful claimants in Blake & Anor v Fox [2024] EWHC 956 (KB). A letter co-ordinated by the Anti-SLAPP Coalition to Justice Secretary Alex Chalk seeks an amendment to the anti-SLAPP bill making its way through Parliament. The letter, signed by editors from publishers like The Times, Guardian and Daily Mail, requests that an objective test be used to determine the intent of the claimant, rather than the subjective test currently proposed.
