Case Law: Twentieth Century Fox v Sky UK, Blocking injunction granted in relation to “Popcorn time” websites – Kana Patsalides

popcorn-time-logoThe High Court has ordered a group of ISPs to block access to the “Popcorn Time” application for copyright film and TV content, in Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and others v Sky UK Ltd and others. News: MGN seeks permission to appeal against hacking damages awards in Gulati case – Louise Turner

Mirror GroupMGN yesterday sought permission to appeal against the very large awards of damages made by Mr Justice Mann in the eight test claims in the hacking litigation arising out of voicemail interception at Mirror Group Newspapers (Gulati v MGN Ltd [2015] EWHC 1482(Ch)). Permission was refused by the Judge. MGN will now seek permission from the Court of Appeal. Continue reading

Third Dutch Google Spain Ruling: convicted murderer does not have “right to be forgotten” – Emiel Jurjens

This was also the objective of recent preliminary relief proceedings brought by a convicted killer. Having served his term, he has been trying to erase all online links between his name and the crime. Case Law, Australia: Jeffrey and Curnow v Giles, Crushed rock damages award increased on appeal – Justin Castelan

casacirJeffrey and Curnow were defamed by statements made by Virginia Giles on a website in 2011. The plaintiffs were directors of a company, Casacir Pty Ltd, which operates a quarry in the south of Victoria. The defendant’s company owned the neighbouring property and the defendant planned to retire there. So when the plaintiff applied for a permit to use the land as a quarry, the defendant objected and there was a hearing at VCAT about that. The defendant lost and the quarry was allowed.
