Anyone reading our national press in the months since Leveson reported would have had little understanding of his proposals or their underlying rationale. With very few exceptions our newspapers, led by the powerful triumvirate of News International, Associated Newspapers and the Telegraph Group, have indulged in a litany of obfuscation, distortion, personal vendettas and exaggerated concerns about the potential impact of these proposals. Super-injunctions are almost an extinct species. ‘Non-super’ privacy injunctions however remain alive and kicking with according to recent figures a 100% success rate on interim applications. The Ministry of Justice has recently published its latest bulletin with statistics on privacy injunction hearings at the High Court and Court of Appeal at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The bulletin covers the period January to June 2013 and statistics are now available from August 2011. Continue reading
On Saturday we had a post about an injunction granted by Mr Justice Cooke against the Wall Street Journal. The injunction [pdf] was made on an interim basis until the hearing on the Southwark Crown Court today. At that hearing Mr Justice Cooke refused to renew the injunction which has, therefore, now lapsed. Continue reading
