It is hardly an exaggeration to suggest that the past two years have seen a media frenzy over the libel tourism debate on both sides of the Atlantic. This relatively recent interest in international libel litigation, focusing on the UK in particular, was brought about by an increasing, but still relatively small, number of American personalities deciding to sue for defamation in the High Court in London.

Leveson Round Up: Has He Thrown in the Towel? – Damian Tambini

Justice LevesonWill media watchers look back on May 2012 as the month in which Leveson made two fateful moves to narrow the remit of his Inquiry?

On one hand, he openly discussed the possibility that Part 2 of his Inquiry will be watered down or abandoned. Part 2 is supposed to delve further into the extent of improper conduct and management failures at News International and possible corruption of the police. The boyfriend of a woman whose body was found in a lake six years ago has won £125,000 libel damages over a police claim that he probably killed her.

Amilton Bento, 31, sued Bedfordshire Police over a press release the force issued in July, 2009 about the case which started with the discovery in January, 2006, of the body of 26-year-old Kamila Garsztka in Priory Lake, Bedford, six weeks after Bento reported her missing.
