The keynote speaker is Sir Michael Tugendhat. Other speakers include members of 5RB who will be joined by leading industry experts: Chris Elliott, Reader’s Editor of the Guardian, James Webster of Hiscox plc and Dr. Daithí Mac Síthigh a leading Lecturer in the Law of Digital Media at the University of Edinburgh and an academic witness at the Leveson inquiry who will share their views on the current reforms and the likely implications in media law today.
Workshop topics will include:
- The public interest – this will provide an overview of the public interest test and how it has been applied and interpreted in the law of privacy/confidence and defamation.
- Internet publication – practical issues: liability of ISPs, injunctive relief and enforcement – this session will look at practical problems that may arise in connection with publication of allegedly unlawful material on the internet, particularly where the ISP is based abroad.
- A future for defamation? – what will the future be for defamation? Includes recent decisions on meaning, the loss of the jury, the proposed new threshold in the Defamation bill and how to use other related causes of action.
- Media regulation update – at a time when the spotlight is trained firmly on media regulation and with a whole host of regulators on the media landscape – this session will explore the different regulators’ regimes, their rules and procedures.
