News: News International to close Phone Hacking Compensation Scheme in April

News of the WorldNews International, also now known as NI Group, has just announced that its Compensation Scheme for victims of mobile phone interception is to close in April 2013.  The Scheme has been in operation since April 2011.  Compensation is assessed by former High Court Judge, Sir Charles Gray.  The announcement is in the following terms:

Compensation Scheme: final application date – 8 April 2013
31 January 2013

NGN considers it to be in the interests of all concerned that there be clarity as to the duration of operation of the Compensation Scheme. Accordingly, NGN would like to announce that only applications received by midnight on 8 April 2013, which is two years from when the Scheme was first announced, will be considered for admission into the Scheme.

Other civil claims for compensation are being made in the High Court in litigation that is being managed by before Mr Justice Vos who is now dealing with “Tranche 2” of the litigation.  The closing date for admission of new cases into this Tranche has now passed but new claimants can apply to join the managed litigation.
